Description:
SI system of units. Electrical power, simple DC principles: voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's law.

Newton's laws, statistics and dynamics, concept of forces, vector diagrams, principle of moments.

Friction and its applications: screw, belt drives, clutches, brakes pulleys and gears.

Pressure and stress, shear stress. Stress-strain relationship. Ultimate strength, safe working stress.

Mechanical properties of steel, aluminium, cast iron, plastic, concrete, timber and composite materials. Couplings both static and dynamic. Specific heat, heat capacity and thermal conductivity.
Assessment is by assignments, practical work and final examination.
